In this Red Exclusive encounter with Asabe Afrika TV team on Thursday 26th of May Year 2022 inside his Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Northern Nigeria home, retired Major General DAVID MEDAYESE JEMIBEWON (CFR, Mni) an elder statesman and former Governor of Old Western State of Nigeria under late General Murthala Mohammed’s regime between August 1975 and March 1976, and first Military Administrator of old Oyo State under General Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR) from 1976 to 1979 spoke on some of the trending issues in the Nigerian Political space.
Jemibewon, a former Police Affairs Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian regime in 1999 spoke on his noble role as first Nigerian to ever conceive the idea of creating a road safety corporation with the birthing of the Oyo State Road Safety Commission with the historic Edict No 18 of Year 1977 establishing the Oyo State Road Safety Commission which was the first active step towards establishing a road safety commission in Nigeria.
The General who after 22 years became a Federal Minister of Police Affairs under the fourth republic led by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo revived and institutionalized the Police Service Commission (PSC) during his regime told Asabe Afrika TV how he brought brilliant minds like Professor Wole Soyinka to work with him and expand the scope of the Oyo State Road Safety Commission which is his brain child before the idea was nationalized in 1987 under General Ibrahim Badamasi’s Military Government.
General Jemibewon exposed how late General Shehu Musa Yar’ Adua as Chief of General Staff (Army Headquarter) and Vice President to General Olusegun Obasanjo aided the birth and success of the idea against oppositions majorly from the Nigerian Police Authorities.
On how he worked with Obasanjo both as under the military and civilian rule, General Jemibewon revealed more amidst lamentation of bad leadership in today’s political environment.
