BARRISTER (MRS.) FUNMI FALANA (SAN) is a legal practitioner and leading Women’s Right Activist. She is the wife of FEMI FALANA, a renowned Nigerian activist and lawyer, and mother of FALZ ‘The Bad Boy’, a Nigerian recording artist and actor.
She is also the daughter of late Nigerian jurist and former Chief Justice of Boswana, AKINOLA AGUDA of blessed memory.
She attended St. Louis Girls’ Grammar School, Akure, Ondo State (Western Nigeria) and University of Benin, Edo State (Southern Nigeria) where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Physics. Like her late Dad who changed course from Medicine to Law (Studied at University of London) in the 50s, she later went to Study Law at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where she bagged her L.L.B and L.L.M in Law and briefly taught law at the faculty of Law, UNILAG.
She left the academics for legal practice and became the Managing Partner of Falana & Falana Chambers headed by her husband.
She is also the founder and National Director of Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA) a non-governmental organization that defends the rights of women and children.
She is a member of several professional and leadership organizations within and outside Nigeria which includes; the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), West African Bar Association (WABA) and International Bar Association (IBA). Mrs. Funmi Falana is also a member of the Chattered Institute of Arbitrators.
As the founder of WELA, she has spearheaded campaigns against rape, gender discrimination and equally sponsored policies that liberated women in several organizations especially the Nigerian Police Force from gender discrimination at work place.
In her capacity she challenged the infamous Regulation 124 of the Police Act which prohibited female officers from getting married until after three years of service, and the court declared the provision was unconstitutional and discriminatory against women and so, it was null and void.
On Monday November 27 of Year 2023, she was promoted to the rank of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Nigerian Legal Practitioners’ Privilege Committee.
On Wednesday December 20th, Asabe Afrika TV team met her at her Adekunle Fajuyi, GRA Ikeja Lagos Chambers to talk on her achievements in law, activism and motherhood.
It was sequel to the annual graduation ceremony of WELA Graduates who graduated from various skill vocational programs ranging from fashion designing, cobbling, Information Technology and Catering Services on Tuesday December 19 at the WELA Institute in Otubu area of Agege, Lagos State.
