Rule 88: Know the undercurrents and hidden agendas

FamousLagos Dr. Tunde Soleye (R) with a friend
When
your boss says he wants to improve customer relations and you should all go on
a course to learn how to smile don’t be fooled. It’s nothing to do with smiling
at customers.  Your boss is coming up for
appraisal time and needs to look good, needs to appear as if there is some
drive, initiative and motivation.

So
you’ll all troop and do the course and try to take it all in and practice your
smile.  What for?  Your boss couldn’t give two monkeys whether
you smile at the customers or not.  All
they want is to shine at their appraisal.

This
sort of thing goes on a lot more at work than most people like to think. Once,
I volunteered to attend college every Monday
to do a course in payroll and double
entry book keeping. My boss thought I was keen, self motivated and very
enthusiastic. Nonsense. I wanted to get out of the office every Monday because that was the day we had
to do all the filing and I hated it.
Going to college seemed a good get-out.

 “Question the motives
of everyone and everything. This doesn’t mean you have to become paranoid. No
one is out to get you.  All you need to
do is watch out for the hidden agenda”

Question
the motives of everyone and everything. This doesn’t mean you have to become
paranoid. No one is out to get you.  All
you need to do is watch out for the hidden agenda.  It might not affect you in any way but it
will be fun to spot what is really going on.
I
once worked for a boss who always liked to be the last to leave.  I thought him conscientious and
industrious.  It was only when he had
been arrested for fraud that I realized that staying, after everyone else had
gone, was his opportunity to fiddle the books. And there was little old admiring
his keen spirit could do.
Always
ask:
·
Why
is this happening?
·
Is
there anything I am missing?
·
Who
benefits from this?
·
How
are they benefiting?
·
What
else could be going on?
·
Can
I benefit from this?
·
How?
As
I said don’t get paranoid, get the facts.
